Convallaria majalis

Medicinal lily

Already in the middle ages people discovered the value of this perennial, but mainly regarding medical science: it was used in medicines for people who had had a stroke or had epilepsy.

Dried flowers, rubbed to powder, were an ingredient for sneezing-powder.
They were also brewed in the fragrant, sweet wine of Napoli di Malvasia (malmsey), a city on the peninsula Morea.
This resulted in aqua aurea, which had a healing effect on many diseases.
The essence was stored in small golden and silver bottles.

But still today the lily of the valley is used in medicines to improve heart function.
Poisonous chemicals in the plant are responsible for this.
